Taxes. Everyone’s favorite topic. When something is so often mentioned in the same phrase with death, it’s pretty clearly not the most popular subject with everyone. But taxes are a necessary part of our lives if we’re going to live in community with one another. It’s important to remember that taxes are not levied to feed “the government” (as so many often allege) – taxes are what we all pay to do the shared business of the people. Government leaders and workers are the vehicles for performing that work. As someone who has seen first-hand the good work that can be accomplished when people and organizations are connected with services that enable them to be productive members of the community, I will advocate for those services to be made available. As a small business owner, I can assure you that I will always be attentive to excess burdens that prevent growth and success and will work to remove those obstacles. When we can see taxes as an investment in the future rather than a punishment, then we’ll have struck the right balance for success for all.
